Assessing Liverpool's successes and failures in the transfer window
Our writers have their say on how Liverpool fared in the January transfer window.
Martin Laurence: After a dream debut, scoring the winner in a Merseyside derby, it appears Virgil van Dijk can’t solve all of Liverpool’s defensive issues. That’s no shock in reality, and the Reds could have done with a keeper and central midfielder following the sale of Philippe Coutinho. The money was there to act now after all, and the fight for a top four spot could go down to the wire.

Josh Wright: It seems like a life time ago that Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk but Jurgen Klopp finally got his man at the start of the month, edging out interest from Manchester City for his signature. He is one of the best defenders in the Premier League, but as has already been illustrated, his arrival isn't just going to magically fix all of Liverpool's problems at the back. Klopp's decision not to replace Philippe Coutinho in January is a huge gamble, but you can only make a real assessment on that in May. A new goalkeeper will surely be a priority at the end of the season.

Ben McAleer: January started off so well for Liverpool as they quickly announced the capture of Virgil van Dijk. However, as the month progressed, the Reds lost both Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge and failed to replace the pair. The defence may have been bolstered, but you get the impression the Reds are short in the final third now, particularly if one of their front three sustains an injury.
