Man City dominate Champions League Team of the Week with win in Paris

With the Champions League semi-final first leg matches completed, now is the ideal time to reflect on the midweek action and reveal our team of the week.

We are currently looking at the prospect of an all-English Champions League final, with both Chelsea and Manchester City in the driving seat of their respective ties with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea secured a 1-1 draw in Madrid, though may live to rue missed chances in the first-half, while City battled back brilliantly from 1-0 down to PSG to win 2-1.

With only four teams left contributing to our team of the week we are able to breakaway from our usual 4-4-2 XI to accomodate the best rated players across the pitch, which is reflected in a 3-5-2 here.

Goalkeeper: Ederson (Manchester City) - 6.88

Ederson could do nothing but watch Marquinhos' header fly past him but he was otherwise untroubled between the sticks for Manchester City. The Brazilian made three saves, superbly stopping his international team-mate, Neymar, moments before PSG opened the scoring. Ederson was typically on hand to sweep up any danger behind the City defence and help give his side the first leg advantage.

Centre-back: Eder Militao (Real Madrid) - 8.37 rating

Eder Militao was considered the weak point of Real Madrid's defence only a few weeks ago but he has turned in superb performances against Liverpool, Barcelona and now Chelsea in quick succession. Not that Militao knew much about it, but it was from his flick-on that Karim Benzema converted for Madrid's equaliser on Tuesday night. Moreover, the Brazilian made 10 tackles and interceptions combined, at least four more than any other player in midweek.

Centre-back: Marquinhos (Paris Saint-Germain) - 7.00

Marquinhos has now scored in the Champions League quarter-finals and semi-finals in successive seasons after flashing in an unstoppable header in the first half on Wednesday. It wasn't enough to give PSG the win but they are at least still in the tie thanks to their captain. Marquinhos typically completed 95.6% of his attempted passes and made four clearances to go with his three tackles and interceptions combined.

Centre-back: Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea) - 7.45 rating

Antonio Rudiger had not created a single goalscoring chance in the Champions League this season prior to Tuesday night and against Madrid he ended up registering two key passes, including the assist for Christian Pulisic's goal. Not only that, but Rudiger hadn't completed a single dribble in the competition either and managed two against Madrid in midweek.

Right wing: Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City) - 8.70 rating

There was a period during Pep Guardiola's early tenure at Manchester City when Riyad Mahrez would never be trusted in the big matches but the Algerian is now a first-team regular and proved once again why with the match-winning goal on Wednesday. Albeit courtesy of a weak PSG wall, Mahrez's free-kick has put City in a superb poisition to make their first ever Champions League final. Moreover, Mahrez completed three dribbles and was fouled four times. He even tracked back and made some important tackles, three in total.

Central midfield: Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) - 7.19 rating

Bernardo Silva played a typically economical role in Manchester City's midfield on Wednesday after initially struggling to get on the ball. Silva came close to equalising for City in the first half, drawing a smart reaction save from Keylor Navas with his only shot of the game. The 26-year-old weighed in with three tackles, registered one key pass and completed two dribbles.

Central midfield: N'Golo Kante (Chelsea) - 7.27 rating

N'Golo Kante was arguably more effective as a ball carrier than a midfield destroyer in Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Real Madrid on Tuesday. Madrid really struggled to match Kante's energy, particularly when he drove forward from midfield. In fact, Kante only completed one tackle and one interception in midweek compared to six successful dribbles. Unsurprisingly, Kante completed the most dribbles across both semi-final first legs.

Central midfield: Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) - 7.26 rating

Toni Kroos may be 31 but he is still a class act. The Real Madrid midfielder continued his streak of completing at least one tackle in every Champions League match this season, making four against Chelsea in midweek. He also chipped in with two interceptions and even won three aerial duels, having only won four in the competition prior to Tuesday night. Kroos typically finished with a pass success rate above 90%, the ninth time he has done so in 11 appearances in the Champions League this term.

Left wing: Phil Foden (Manchester City) - 7.65 rating

After struggling to get a touch of the ball initially, Phil Foden really grew into the game against Paris Saint-Germain and should have actually scored to draw City level. Foden registered three shots in total, completed as many dribbles and impressively finished the match with a pass success rate of 95.3%.

Striker: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) - 7.41 rating

Real Madrid will feel they got out of jail against Chelsea with a 1-1 draw and it was Karim Benzema, as it so often has this season, that bailed them out. Benzema was denied a stunning long range effort by the woodwork but then scored arguably an even better goal to draw Madrid level. Benzema should great anticipation for Eder Militao's header before controlling with his head and then unleashing an unstoppable volley past a helpless Edouard Mendy. It took him level with Raul on 71 goals in European football and fourth on the all-time list.

Striker: Christian Pulisic (Chelsea) - 8.47 rating

While Timo Werner continues to flounder in front of goal, Christian Pulisic at least stepped up for Chelsea and showed great composure for his goal. Pulisic rounded Thibaut Courtois and then fired his effort beyond two Real Madrid defenders on the line to give Chelsea the perfect start in Spain. Pulisic also completed five dribbles and was given the Eden Hazard treatment, winning six fouls.  The 22-year-old also registered three key passes, though his team-mates failed to convert each time.
