Bayern Munich defender ruled out for Real Madrid clash

Bayern Munich have been dealt a huge blow in their attempts to come through their Champions League quarter-final clash with Real Madrid after receiving news defender Mats Hummels will miss their first-leg on Wednesday with an ankle injury.

Hummels came off the bench to play the final 11 minutes of Bayern’s 4-1 trouncing of Borussia Dortmund on Saturday afternoon but suffered the injury in training on Sunday, which has subsequently ruled him out of their home meeting with the reigning European Champions.

The extent of Hummels’ injury is not yet known but it does not look good for the Germany international after Bayern conceded he would be sidelined for the foreseeable future, making him a huge doubt for the return leg on April 18.

Bayern Munich defender ruled out for Real Madrid clash

The 28-year-old has been in sublime form since returning to Bayern from Dortmund last summer and his absence will be a huge blow in their attempts to shutting out the likes of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

Hummels’ absence will likely see Javi Martinez partner Jerome Boateng at the heart of Bayern’s defence, which is by no means a bad move, but given Hummels is Bayern’s highest rated defender this season (7.36), it does weaken their chances of getting a good result.
