Wenger outlines how Arteta can get the best out of Arsenal outcast
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has been given tips on how to get the best out of outcast Mesut Ozil by former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
Wenger brought Ozil to Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 and the German enjoyed ample success with the Frenchman at the Emirates helm up until his exit in 2018.
Unai Emery succeeded Wenger in north London before Arteta took over the reins in December 2019.
Ozil featured regularly when Arteta took charge up until the postponement of football in March due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but hasn't featured since Arsenal's 1-0 win over West Ham.
The 31-year-old was recently left out of Arsenal's Europa League squad with Ozil out of favour under Arteta.
However, speaking to Die Speigel, Wenger believes Ozil can still be effective, but the system in places needs to play to his strengths.
"He wasn't exactly the one with the greatest discipline on the pitch. And playing the game without the ball wasn’t exactly his forte," Wenger said.
"But you can deal with that if you put some more defensively minded players by his side. The main thing is to get the balance between attack and defence right."
Ozil remained an Arsenal player once the transfer window closed, but he still has a potential out from the Emirates with an unnamed club from Saudi Arabia believed to have made a "lucrative" offer to take the creator off of the Gunners' hands.
