Pogba and Jorginho star in Euro 2020 gameweek 1 best XI
With the first round of group games from Euro 2020 done and dusted, now is the perfect time to take stock of the action so far. Here we run through the best rated XI from the gameweek 1 action.
Goalkeeper: Lukas Hradecky (Finland) - 9.18 rating
No one would have expected it but Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky is actually our WhoScored Player of the Round. The 31-year-old was Finland's match winner in difficult circumstances against Denmark, saving a penalty to ensure a 1-0 victory in their first ever European Championship match. Hradecky ended up making six saves, more than any other goalkeeper across all groups.
Right-back: Nelson Semedo (Portugal) - 8.03 rating
There will be tougher tests ahead but Nelson Semedo got his Euro campaign off to a fine start as Portugal eventually ran out 3-0 winners against Hungary on Wednesday. In as a late replacement for Joao Cancelo, Semedo was key at both ends of the pitch. The Wolves full-back made the joint-most tackles in a game along with Toni Kroos (7) and also helped Portugal advance up the pitch and create goalscoring chances with two dribbles completed and as many key passes.
Centre-back: Milan Skriniar (Slovakia) - 8.53 rating
Inter defender Milan Skriniar helped Slovakia pull off a shock 2-1 win against Poland in their opener, claming his third goal in four caps. The 26-year-old weighed in with 10 clearances and four tackles and interceptions combined to help his country over the line, while also being typically efficient in possession with a pass success rate of 93.8%.
Centre-back: Daniel O'Shaughnessy (Finland) - 7.85 rating
Daniel O'Shaughnessy is the second Finnish player in our best XI after playing a key role in keeping a clean sheet against Denmark. The 26-year-old won six aerial duels, weighed in with seven tackles and interceptions combined and helped alleviate the pressure with seven clearances.
Left-back: Raphael Guerreiro (Portugal) - 7.93 rating
It looked like it was going to be one of those days for Portugal in their opening game against Hungary only for left-back Raphael Guerreiro to give his side the lead with six minutes remaining. It surprisingly marked his first goal for country since 2016. The Borussia Dortmund ace also completed in excess of 90% of his attempted passes, while making four tackles to help Portugal shut Hungary out.
Right midfield: Thomas Meunier (Belgium) - 8.11 rating
Only introduced as a result of injury to Timothy Castagne but things couldn't have gone better for Thomas Meunier against Russia. The Borussia Dortmund wing-back scored a second for Belgium before setting up Romelu Lukaku for his second of the game late on. The perfect impact made by a substitute.
Central midfield: Jorginho (Italy) - 8.18 rating
Italy made light work of one of the pre-tournament darkhorses in Turkey, with Chelsea's Jorginho playing a central role for Roberto Mancini's side. The 29-year-old had the best pass success rate of any Italy starter (93.9%), dictacting the pace of the game as they ran out 3-0 winners in the tournament curtain raiser. Jorginho also created three goalscoring chances, only one fewer than his record in a single Premier League game last season. He also successfully completed two dribbles and while managing seven tackles and interceptions combined.
Central midfield: Paul Pogba (France) - 7.86 rating
Paul Pogba played a key role in France's 1-0 win over Germany, showing exactly what he is capable of when surrounded with world-class players. Pogba pretty much created the opening goal himself. It was from his mesmirising pass that Lucas Hernandez was free to smash across goal for Mats Hummels to divert into his own goal. Pogba finished the game with four aerials won, three dribbles completed, four fouls won and five tackles and inteceptions combined.
Left midfield: Lorenzo Insigne (Italy) - 7.81 rating
Lorenzo Insigne helped himself to his first ever goal at a major tournament in Italy's thrashing of Italy. The 30-year-old has now scored in four of his last five for club and country. It seemed like Insigne had wasted his best goalscoring chances but finally found the far corner with a classic curling effort late on, as he finished with five attempts. He also created three goalscoring chances for his team-mates.
Striker: Patrick Schick (Czech Republic) - 8.89 rating
Keeping out the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Ciro Immobile from the XI is Czech Republic's Patrick Schick. The Bayer Leverkusen striker scored a superb header to give his side the lead away to Scotland before netting one of the best goals in European Champonship history to wrap up all three points. Schick's header was already brilliant but his second, a curling lob from just inside Scotland's half, will live long in the memory of most, unfortunately for the whole of Scotland.
Striker: Breel Embolo (Switzerland) - 8.68 rating
Breel Embolo was unfortunate to have three points to show for his efforts against Wales on Saturday. The 24-year-old gave Switzerland the lead just after half-time only to see Wales equalise late on. Embolo had six attempts in total, completed four dribbles and registered two key passes. He was unplayable at times and Wales will be glad to see the back of him.
