Paris Saint-Germain knocked off perch as most in-form side in Europe by surprise package

Paris Saint-Germain have lost their position as the most in-form side in Europe’s top five leagues, according to our unique algorithm based on team performances over their last six league matches. Thomas Tuchel’s side succumbed to their first league defeat of the campaign on Sunday, losing 2-1 away to rivals Lyon.

The French champions have still won four of their last six in the league and only fell one place to second, helped by the fact the likes of Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, who occupied 2nd, 3rd and fourth, respectively, in last week’s team form rankings also slipped up at the weekend.

An unlikely set of results from the aforementioned quartet has paved the way for a surprise new leader at the top of our team form rankings. RB Leipzig, who ranked 11th in the last edition of the form rankings, have gatecrashed the top-10 into first place.

Leipzig have bounced back from a slender 1-0 defeat to Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund with successive away victories at a combined score of 7-0. Ralf Rangnick’s side have won four of their last six and racked up 14 goals in that time.

Atalanta are also on the move in our form rankings. The Serie A outfit have moved up two places after winning 1-0 away to Cagliari on Monday night. Atalanta are now unbeaten in their last five league games and have drawn with Juventus and Roma in that time, while putting six and five goals past Sassuolo and Frosinone, respectively.

Real Madrid have rarely come close to breaching the top-10, which is no surprise given their woes this season. However, Santiago Solari’s side are on a four-game winning streak in the league – their best run of the season – and move up 10 places as a result. They are even one place ahead of Barcelona ahead of their Copa Clasico meeting on Wednesday.
