Varane's horror-show against Man City among worst rated Champions League displays

Having already looked at the best individual displays of the 2019/20 Champions League it's time to do the opposite and find out which players had nights to forget on European football's biggest stage.

In the same format as the aforementioned article, we will start at sixth and countdown to the worst WhoScored rated individual performance of the campaign ahead of Sunday night's final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

6. Anthony Lopes (Lyon) vs Benfica, 23/10/19 - 4.66 rating

Lyon incredibly made it to the Champions League semi-finals before being dumped out by Bayern Munich but things didn't look promising back in October when the French side had only one win in three group games. Lyon lost 2-1 to Benfica in gameweek three, with goalkeeper Anthony Lopes stinking the place out. The Lyon shot-stopper didn't make a single save and his error leading to goal led to Benfica's in the 85th-minute.

5. Douglas Santos (Zenit) vs Benfica, 10/12/19 - 4.64 rating

Benfica benefitted from another atrocious individual display to claim a victory in Group G, this time with Zenit's Douglas Santos getting himself sent off in a 3-0 defeat to the Portuguese outfit in December. Santos was shown his marching orders just before the hour mark, picking up his second yellow of the game after conceding a penalty. Benfica converted to make it 2-0 and secure all three points, while Santos trudged off without even making a successful tackle.

4. Raphael Varane (Real Madrid) vs Manchester City, 07/08/20 - 4.63 rating

Raphael Varane had an evening to forget in Real Madrid's round of 16 second leg defeat to Manchester City at the start of the month. Without Sergio Ramos by his side, the 27-year-old committing an error directly leading to each of City's goals as Madrid lost 2-1 and exited the competition 4-2 on aggregate. Varane has committed three errors directly leading to an opposition goal in the Champions League this season, more than any other player.

3. Hugo Lloris (Tottenham) vs Bayern Munich, 01/10/19 - 4.47 rating

After conceding seven goals it's unsurprising Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris garnered one of the lowest WhoScored ratings in a Champions League match this season. Tottenham's 7-2 defeat at home to Bayern Munich could have been worse had Lloris not made three saves. However, it doesn't change the fact the 2018 World Cup winner picked the ball out the back of his own net on seven occasions during a hugely damaging European night for the north London outfit.

2. Joel Veltman (Ajax) vs Chelsea, 05/11/19 - 4.27 rating

Ajax held Chelsea to a 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge at the start of November but will have been disappointed not to have won the game. The turning point was certainly in the 68th and 69th minute when Ajax had two players sent off, including Joel Veltman. The 28-year-old, now of Brighton, managed four tackles and interceptions combined but his dismissal certainly swung the tie back into Chelsea's favour to salvage a point. Ajax ended up missing out on knockout football by one point.

1. Maarten Vandevoordt (Genk) vs Napoli, 10/12/19 - 3.84 rating

European debuts are meant to be special but it certainly wasn't for 17-year-old Genk goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt. The teenager became the youngest ever goalkeeper to start a Champions League game when Genk faced Napoli before Christmas but there were no early festive presents for the Belgian. In fact, he was the gift that kept giving for Napoli. Vandevoordt conceded four and made a horrible error for after just three minutes, dwelling on a back pass to gift Arkadiusz Milik the first of three goals. Vandevoordt then picked up a booking later in the half after conceding a penalty from which Milik notched his hat-trick. His display is the worst rated of the 2019/20 Champions League to date.
